Operation Over and Feeling Fine

Hi everyone
I'm delighted to report I had my gallbladder removed last Friday following an ambulance trip into hospital in the wee small hours of Wednesday! My surgeon, Mr MacFarlane, did an excellent, neat job and I'm getting better every day.
I may even manage a little bit of sewing over the next couple of days. That would be good!
It may be a little bit longer before I get back on my bicycle! But keep your eyes peeled on my cycle blog and keep up with what's happening over there. The link is on the top left of this page.
In the meantime I'll be reading all your blog updates and finding out what you've been up to in your quilting moments.
As I've no new sewing pics to publish I am sharing a photo of where I live. The view is very near where my house is. It's a lovely little village and I do enjoy living here very much.

My house is further up on the right hand side and I have a great view of high hills and a valley. The sun sets over the hills and often the sky looks as if it's on fire.

W.I.P. Wednesday

I'm so glad I "signed up" to the W.I.P. Wednesday because it did make me sit down and apply myself to my new broken Star quilt for my friend Cheryl. However, with a young kitten in the house my time was seriously limited and anyone who has had one of these bundles of fur will know they never sleep when you want them to!!
However, I've got a bit of the centre of my friend's quilt done, although it HAS driven me a little mad!! I just couldn't seem to get the whole thing to sit flat and fit together neatly, but I think I've got it sussed now. Funnily enough the very first Broken Star top I made when I was VERY new to piecing went together pretty well.
Maybe I'm losing my touch!!
Here's my progress for this Wednesday.....

Livingstone Daisies

Hi again, just want to share with you today a piccy of the lovely Livingstone Daisies that are smiling so vibrantly in my garden today. DH planted these especially for me and I think you'll agree they are just fabulous. Those colours are very inspiring and I am so fond of the orange ones.

Broken Star Quilt Started

Hi, as promised yesterday I'm going to show you the very early stages of my new Broken Star quilt for my friend Cheryl.
As previously mentioned I had free reign with the colours so it took me a little while to decide fully on which colours I would use. This may have been due to the fact that my first Broken Star quilt top was very bold and bright. In fact I called it "Fire Star" but didn't finish the quilt as I was not happy with the quality of sewing. I had started it at the beginning of my "quilting life" and had not as yet discovered Freezer Paper as a backing. The paper I had used had a bit of a sheen to the surface like magazine pages. Here are three photos of that first unfinished quilt top.....

And now the new quilt colours which may seem a bit dull compared to the colours in the above one but they are brighter in real life. The turquoise is a great fabric, nice and fresh and bright, followed by a beautiful lilac/pale purple fabric. The next fabric is a rich purple and I think sits very well between the paler purple and the bright sunshine yellow. Here's how it came out in a photo......

To test my colours I always use my trusty little "peeper"!! Have you discovered how useful a door peeper is in quilting yet? You can buy them for a couple of pounds in most hardware stores. Here's the one I use. I attached a piece of string to it so I can keep it round my neck and not lose it while I'm playing with colours!!

Try this little gadget. It really works. Just have a look at your quilt or selected colours through the peeper. It's always best to have your coloured pieces already cut so you are actually looking at a test piece instead of just pieces of coloured fabric. You'll soon know if there are any glaring "no-no's" in your quilt.

Please tell me what you think of the new colours for the Broken Star quilt. Have you used this combination of colours before and how do you feel it worked in your project? And I'd be delighted to know if there are more door peepers out there being used in quilting rooms rather than in doors!!!

Just HAD to stop for a moment and post a pic of our new baby "Sebbie" ( short for Sebastian). He is slightly feral but we only got him last night and he is coming on so well. He has a little sore eye and his face looks VERY dirty, but he has had a wash since the photos and looks better now. He's just adorable and here he is.....................

My First Comissioned Quilt....Yay!!!

I have to say I'm quite excited that someone is trusting me enough with a pile of fabric and some wadding to make them a quilt they will treasure!! The person who has asked me to make the quilt is a very dear young ( MUCH younger than me!!) woman with a growing family. Her name is Cheryl. She says she doesn't mind what colour or pattern it is, so I have free reign!! Dangerous!!
No, seriously, I am SO looking forward to making this quilt and I've already been auditioning some purple and yellow fabrics to make a "Farmer's Wife" quilt. That's the plan at the moment!Here are some of the fabrics I've pulled from my stash........

And here are some blocks I may use. The border will be a rich, dark purple and nice bright, rich yellow, which I'm hoping will give the quilt a bit of "ZING"!!

My other project is going to be decorative cushion covers and I recently found the perfect companion fabric to go with some lovely fabric I bought about 10 years ago. That particular fabric is the mustard and red pattern fabric for which I found a red and tan stripe fabric. The colours have not come out as bright and true to their original colours so as you look just think "mustard and rich red"!! It's hard to explain what I have in mind so please keep watching this space for my progress. Here are the fabrics and ribbon.....

And finally for today a couple of pictures from our little garden which my husband tends with much love.......

Himalayan Poppy. A lovely little flower which has survived strong winds and rain here this summer.

This darling little flower is actually a wild orchid. We didn't pinch it from the roadside!!! We can only presume a bird "passed" a seed while it was feeding in our garden. Aren't birds delightful! They sing out of one end and "sling" out of the other end!!!

This gorgeous pink poppy only came out yesterday so I thought I'd get a photo while it was still reasonably fresh. We've had red, pink and salmon pink poppies this year so far, thanks to hubby!

Last, but by no means least, the unstoppable snow in summer plant.
I like the contrast of the snow white against the green foliage.

Nature's Ways

I have been awaiting the arrival of a young friend's kittens. The mother is a long haired calico and the father a ginger and white long hair. Both beautiful cats and as it was a ginger kitten I've been looking for I thought this would be it and I'd finally have one.
Sadly, she only had two baby kitties and they both didn't make it. She seemed to have no maternal instinct and refused to let them feed from her. We can't argue with nature, but it sure hurts sometimes!
I'm going to make sure the young chap keeps his eye on the mummy cat as she may have or get mastitis with any milk not being expressed.
It would still be nice to find that special little ginger kitten!!

Cushion Covers

Hi just showing you a couple of things I've been doing in the last week or so between other quilty things and waiting for my op.
The cushions are for my sister's suite. There are 4 cushions in the set. She's really pleased with them. The fabric was originally a pair of curtains from a charity shop and I bought them knowing what I was going to make them into. Here they are......

That's Brodie Bassett posing alongside and making sure the cushions don't fall over. He's a great help!!!

And these little guys are going to be a large quilted cushion cover for my husband who has arthritis of the spine and needs something quite large and soft at his back while he watches TV..................

Blue and White Snowball Quilt Top Finished!!

I'm delighted to say I have finished the top of my blue and white snowball quilt. I have enjoyed every second of this English Paper Pieced quilt and am looking forward to hand quilting it. English Paper Piecing and hand quilting are definitely my favourite ways of creating a quilt. So here's a pic of the quilt for you.....

I cropped quite closely on the photo to spare you the sight of my husband's little legs below the quilt. He very good-humouredly held the quilt up for me, even though he was watching something "important" on the telly!!

A Couple More Pin Cushions and a Coaster in the Early Stages!

Hi everyone, this is a little catch up bloggy just to let you know what I've been up to between gall stone bouts!
Here is a little cockleshell pincushion, front and back......

And I love the fabric in this little cushion. Sadly I only had enough to make one.........

The other side of the cushion is green polka dot fabric which matched the green spool of thread on the front perfectly. I wasn't initially sure if it was too much of a contrast but I'm happy with it now and feel it works fine.

I decided to make something a little bigger today so I selected some puffin fabric and a bright red "dimples" fabric and cut out a 6 inch square of each plus 6 inches of thin wadding to make a coaster. These are the fabrics.............

I will be making them in sets, each set consisting of four coasters. They will be bound in a multicoloured fabric that picks out all the colours in the puffin fabric. I'll post a photo once I get the first set done.

Puffins come here to Shetland every year to breed. They are adorable little birds and so tame you can get right up to them to photograph them. Normally there is a webcam set up to watch a particular nest at the south end of Shetland. Unfortunately this year nature was not in this puffin family's favour and the egg didn't hatch. It's just one of those things. It happens in the natural world.

I will be selling the puffin coasters on Etsy but if you would like a set I can always accept payment through Paypal. There will be another set coming soon with gannets on. The fabric is just as beautiful and, as we have gannets here too in abundance, I will be selling both these sets as Shetland souvenirs. A great present for friends or family.

My next blog will hopefully be tomorrow, when I will show you a couple of things I picked up in a charity shop and destined for my Etsy shop.

Some Cutey Little Pin Cushions!

Although I haven't quite finished the snowball quilt yet and I thought I maybe would have done by now, I have actually been sitting at the sewing machine this weekend for some of the time. The rest of the time was spent trying to tidy my sewing room/office.
It was crying out to me!!!
So I thought I'd show you the little pin cushions I've been making for Cancer Research UK. My friend Polly is having a stall at one of our local agricultural shows this year and we're all pitching in to make something to help raise money.
The pin cushions all have one thing on one side eg. a sheep, with perhaps a dog or a flower or tree on the other side.
Hope you like these little ones!!

And then I decided I needed brighter fabric for a change so I created this humorous little cushion.

That's the front and back.
I hope to get many more finished before the show so we can raise as much money as possible. Every little helps.
I've found a lovely kiddies apron pattern which I may try out tomorrow if me and hubby don't go into town.

It's Been a While

Yes, it's been a while!! It feels like ages and it's definitely been too long, but I've had several months of bad health and still don't feel good a lot of the time. But it's nothing that can't be fixed and I'm awaiting surgery which will make a huge difference.
Here's a peek at how the Dresden Plate is coming along, although I've got more done than this photo shows.....

I've enjoyed every minute of this one and can't wait to get it layered and quilted up.
I've also almost finished the Snowball Quilt top. I'll try to put photos on tomorrow.
Needless to say I have other projects going on at the same time. I will let you see the very first beginnings of a purple Broken Star quilt I hope to hand make. It will literally be the fabrics you will see and I think you'll really like them.
There's so much more to share but for tonight, that's it folks because I'm off to bed to have a good sleep and make an early start on my quilting.

My First Attempt at Variable Star Block

Hi again.
I've been busy these last couple of days trying to master the Variable Star block. For some this will be a block you could do with your eyes shut, but for me it was a great learning experience. It also MADE me use the sewing machine!
So here they are........

Shirty Quilt Fabrics

My "shirty quilt fabrics" stash is growing slowly and I thought I'd just give you a look at the shirts I've bought so far from charity shops. The other day when I went into town our local Save the Children shop had a sign on the window which said, "Fill a bag for £1.00"". I didn't need a second bidding! While there I got another two shirts, so here's what I've got so far......

There's actually quite a lot of fabric there as most of the shirts are quite big and two of them have long sleeves.I was thinking of a cunning plan though! I could wait until dear hubby goes out somewhere, then I would cut the sleeves off his shirts, hem them and say they were short sleeved all the time and he must be experiencing senior moments!! But I wouldn't do that. He'd just get shirty with me!!

Off now to work on my "snowball" quilt which seems to be taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r!!!

Liberated House Block for Block Lotto

Here's my very first attempt at a Liberated ( or Wonky) House block.
My eyes were going wonky by the time I'd finished. This little fellow was a challenge as I do nearly everything by hand, over freezer paper and with exact geometric shapes!!I'm not quite delighted with it but I'll share it anyway just to encourage others who may think they can't do other things too!!

I've Lost Four Pounds...........

Six lovely cross stitch books, one of which would have cost me £14.99 to buy new!

Here's a closer look at my super bargains.....

This is a fabulous hard back edition of "Design Your Own Cross Stitch" by Shirley Watts, a well known cross stitch designer, known also for her avid love of nature, conservation and photography. I simply adore the blue and white windmill design on this apron.....

I was thinking of perhaps making this scene larger by adding trees, clouds, birds etc to the sides and top and maybe even having a river in front with a fisherman casting into the river. Then the original scene would actually become the view the fisherman has from his standpoint. Could perhaps even add a little sailboat somewhere too. Endless options from one idea!! Perfect!

Also these trinket box lids really appealed to me. I have a storage stool that's in need of re-upholstering and I was thinking of adapting this design to fit a square cover with sides of about 1 and a half inches......

The next book is "The Beatrix Potter Needlepoint Book" by Pat Menchini which contains some adorable Potter characters.I picked this one to show you for it's cuteness factor.......

It's Mrs Tittlemouse! Perhaps she has nodded off after too much cheese pie!! Could that be why I identified with her so readily???? Hmmmm! Who knows!! (Only me!)

There were also 4 delightful small paperback books among my bargains. Here they are........

These little books were originally priced at £5.99 each. I got them for 50 pence each.

The Cuddly Cats and Kittens book is my favourite of the small ones. There are two cartoon cat designs. Just look at them......

Sale Fabrics I Couldn't Resist

First of all, a warm welcome to my new followers!!

Yesterday I visited my local fabric store which was having a sale. Although there were lots of different things in the sale section I headed immediately to the fabrics like a demented homing pigeon and got my beak into the autumn colours!!!

These are the fat quarters I came away with........

The red one is "Turn of the Century" designed for Exclusively Quilters. It is such a pretty little paisley fabric!
The delightful little spotty fabric is "Country Kitchen Spot" by Makower UK.
The green is one of "Florrie's Favorites" - A Florence Peto Collection by Froncie Quinn, endorsed by Shelburne Museum for Red Rooster Fabrics.
I'm not sure what the next fabric is as there was no selvage attached to it. Perhaps if you know the name you could let me know as I would gladly have more of this design. I may be able to get the name of it from the shop if they still have some left.
I adore the next fabric which was designed by Jo Morton for Andover fabrics. This is a beautiful cinammon colour. The very last fabric is the same range but in a nutmeg colour. Between those two fabrics is a scrumptious rich brown and rust fabric but without the selvage edge again :>(

I think I would like to use these fabrics for either the grape basket or flower basket design but they would be stunning used in the Fons and Porter Oak Leaf Quilt.

I can visualize the red paisley as a basket and the spotty fabric as the 'flowers'. Here's a basket pic to help you visualize it too.......

Off now to get a cup of tea and do some more stitching. Two of my favourite things!!

My Latest Find and My Jammy Trophy!!

Well I can hardly believe we're at the weekend again. This week has gone VERY quickly and brought along with it a change of weather for sure. Here in Shetland we have gale force winds which stopped the ferry sailing last night so anyone who wanted to get off the island would have been disappointed. The air has turned markedly colder and the guy in the chip shop told us there was frost due this weekend!! I'm not sure how good a forecaster a chip shop guy really is!! Perhaps he was just "chewin' the fat"!
My photos today are of a lovely little chest of drawers me and hubby found in a second hand store the other day. It has a vague touch of art deco about it and we love it!

Made of a creamy marbled melamine veneer, it has a gorgeous shine to it and looks great against our pale yellow wall. Of course it's almost full up with "stuff" already, but that's what drawers are for!!

The trophy is the one I received for my "best in show" jam. I was told later it was the smell of the fresh strawberries that did it!!! I had only made the jam a couple of days before the show so I may do that again next year.
I noticed from the winners names engraved on the back that no one has won the trophy 2 years in a row, so that is my "mission" for next year!!

Now I'm off to settle down with my snowball quilt. I want to get as much of the top finished this weekend as possible.

Insomnia Gets The Quilts Made!!!

Well, here I am blogging at 7.45am after being awake all night. This is nothing new for me but it is SO annoying. But on the plus side, I managed to finish all my 32 '9 patch blocks' for my snowball quilt. All hand sewn over freezer paper. My absolutely favourite method for patchwork. Here's a photo of the quilt top so far. It was difficult to get the proper angle for photographing as all my floor space is quite small. But here we are anyway...........

Next is the 'simple' task of making about 124 corner pieces for the snowballs and the snowballs themselves. A few more nights of insomnia and it'll all be finished!!! Ha ha!!

Snowball Sneak Peek!

I've been working steadily on my snowball quilt and thought I'd just post an update. All hand sewn with freezer paper templates, I am REALLY enjoying this project. I even sit up in bed with a lap tray and sew while DH is reading!
Hope you like the pic. Should have all 32 9 patches done by the weekend and then on to the corners of the snowballs and the snowballs themselves.

Snowball Quilt for Winter Maybe?

I have been auditioning fabrics today with the possibility of a Snowball Quilt to be hand-pieced over the next 2 - 3 months. I have some lovely blue fabrics which would combine with a cream snowball very easily. Do you like them too?

The Paisley fabric is simply gorgeous but is a slightly different shade of blue than in the photo. I am so looking forward to working with these fabrics and the small 2 inch squares that will be hand sewn together to make the 9 patch squares between the snowballs.

But first I must finish some bright floral spool pieces. I bought the bright floral 4 inch squares as they were so cheerful but then didn't quite know what to do with them. Now I've decided to make the spools with black fabric between each. Here are some of the VERY bright spools so far.

I chose black as I thought it would really set off the bright colours nicely. Hope it works!! Just off now to do some more.

Just want to share this photo with you.
I was in a charity shop the other day with my son when I found these multi-coloured shoes. ( I'd never wear shoes like these in a million years!!). Being a keen amateur photographer too, I knew exactly what I would do with them. So here's the result of my charity shop hopping, my amateur photography, linked with my interest in quilting and devoted user of Gutermann thread.

Progress Report

Well, here is my first progress report since taking the pledge a few days ago. I have sewn both the blue and yellow borders onto my Dresden Plate quilt and I'm now ready for the white border. This fabric will match the background fabric that the plates are on. I am still liking the freshness of this quilt.

My other project is a small pink and white quilt with applique flowers round the edges. This is just an ""experiment"" really. I don't think applique is ever going to be one of my favourite methods, but I wanted to at least give it a try!

I'll probably put some leaves along the 'stems' and some yellow butterflies across the quilt, but I'm open to much better ideas!!!

I'm off to sewing group tomorrow where we are being shown foundation piecing. Again, this is new to me and I am keen to learn this method.

I'm So Jammy!!!

First of all, ""hi from Shetland"" to my new follower!! You are very welcome here. I hope you'll enjoy my "ramblings" and also laugh with me at my "senior moments" which get thrust upon me every now and again!.
I truly thought I was having a senior moment when I went to the local show and saw the results of my handful of entries. For me, my strawberry jam result was probably the most appreciated as my dad made jam that was known throughout most of Shetland and I like to think I am able to carry on some of that skill in his memory.
So here is a photo of my jam with it's "First Prize" rosette and also "Best in Show". I nearly fainted. My hubby actually asked if I was OK because my face went pure white with shock!!

I received "Third Prize" in the colour portrait section for this photo.....

....and a "Highly Commended" award for both of the photos below......

Needless to say I am already thinking of what to enter into the show next year!! Maybe some cakes, more jam, patchwork and quilting and other sewing projects....do you think I've been bitten by a bug!!! ha ha!

In A Real Jam!!

This evening I have been getting the last of my 'show' things ready for Saturday.
I still had to make "lemon curd" so I bought some lovely fresh lemons from the shop and one of the neighbours sold me 6 fresh, free range eggs, laid only this morning. They were big!!
So I set about making the curd. It smelled gorgeous as I was making it and I was already picturing a rosette!! ( in my dreams!)
I stirred until it thickened and all was well.....until I took it off the heat and left it to cool for a few minutes, stirring a little bit here and there.
I said to my husband that I thought there were a few little "imperfections" in this curd which I didn't experience last time I made it using the same recipe. So I thought I would just run it through the strainer to see if that would help.
Well!!! I got the strainer, took the whole thing over to the sink and started straining.....completely forgetting to put something under it to catch the lemon curd!!! That's right! It all disappeared down the plug hole!!! I couldn't stop laughing, it was so bizarre!
Fortunately I kept back a jar I made from my most recent batch which will suffice. But I still can't believe I did that!!
Here's a pic of the lemon curd with it's little "sunhat" on, and the four jams together that I am submitting to our local agricultural show on Saturday.

I can hardly believe it's been just over a year since I last blogged. There have been various reasons for this. Mainly health and responsibilities that I found took most of my energy but I hope those of you who kindly followed before will take up the gauntlet again!!! LOL
I am posting the progress with the blue and yellow Dresden Plate quilt and in the next few days will also post a photo of the quilt with it's two recent borders. The "plates" are hand pieced and the sashing and posts are machined.

Travels With My Camera

I should be in bed as it's 20 to 2 in the morning but I've been putting a few photos on my photography blog and I thought I'd put my favourite on here.
I went to Sumburgh ( about 40 miles from home) with my camera today ( which is now yesterday!!) and got some lovely shots of the puffins. They are adorable little birds with the most comical expressions and are extremely tame!!

......but it's still progress!

I've been busy this week and not had time to do very much quilting. In the middle of it all I had to fix the sewing machine which appeared to have the hiccups!!!
But here's my progress so far..............

All 16 'plates' are made and on their white squares. I just have to add all the sashing and posts.
But I'm quite pleased with it. I love the crisp freshness of the colours.
If the left side sashing and post looks a bit 'wonky' it's only because I have the whole think held up there by 2 bits of Uhu White Tack!! It's not really wonky!
Now it's time to make dinner and then have another go at the quilt!

A Sweet Pill to Swallow!!!

Just had to show you these two darling little pillboxes I picked up at a charity shop in town for £1.00 each. They measure 1 and a half inches in diameter (near enough) and just over half an inch high. They are silver in colour with their beautiful floral hinged lids. Enjoy the pics!!

MY NEW QUILTING BUDDY!

I woke up this morning to find my new quilting buddy, Abraham, with my scissors in his hands!

I tried to remove them without upsetting him but as you can see it didn't quite work out!!

I said he could help himself to a sweetie, even though he hadn't had his breakfast!!

Dougal Being Fed Up!!

Dougal was actually sleeping! He also hangs off the footstool like this too, then slowly but surely slides off onto the floor and continues sleeping in whatever position he lands in!! He's a cool dude is our Dougal!!

Agricultural Show

Well, it's almost time for the annual agricultural show where I live. It actually takes place in the field at the back of our house so we don't have to go far to see what's on show!! The men with muscles and appropriate vehicles ( or should that be vehicles and appropriate muscles!!!) have been gathering the tents, fencing and 'Portaloo's' in preparation for the day.
I'm looking forward to seeing the needlework and craft exhibits, but I'm equally at home among the livestock and homebakes!!!

My New Car!!!

I WISH!!!

You can tell the hot weather is getting to me!! I seem to have caught a (VW) 'Bug' ( although we call them Beetles) and I'm seeing spots before my eyes!!
Well, I haven't been out for 4 days except to visit the dentist. When I came back I was feeling very weak and had a tummy upset. That's what happens when I venture forth in heat I'm not used to. Over the last few days, some areas of Shetland have reached the mid to high 20'sC. For some of you reading this, that may be quite normal, or even just 'warm'!! For me??? Well, just call me 'doo-lally'!!!
So I decided to have a go at doing something a little different. I love Volkswagen Beetles and intend to make a wallhanging with 9 different fabrics, trying to reflect the original Beetle era.
Here are a few of the fabrics I have chosen. I've used the same 'windows' and 'wheels' as I did on the polkadot one above, simply because I haven't actually made these yet. So just imagine them with the coordinating coloured 'hub caps' and wheel arches!! And various backgrounds too.
Please let me know which one is your favourite. It makes it more fun!! Here we go!

I was hoping to have a quilt update today but it hasn't happened, so here are some pieces of artwork I prepared earlier!!!
In fact MUCH earlier. Probably about 3 years ago or more!

Pastels are probably my favourite medium for creating artwork. I have never been very successful with watercolour ( which shows!!) but I was beginning to really enjoy the 'dot' work with Fineliner pens, both black and colour.
The pen pictures you see above are not finished ( I have quilts following that same pattern too!!) but I did them as an experiment and was relatively pleased with the result.
I am now off to make chicken salad, then I will be settling down to quilting!!

It's Like Spinning Plates Here!

Just a very quick update on how 'the plates' are stacking up!!
I've got SEVEN of the Dresden Plates onto their white squares now. I can't quite believe it!
I've decided on this blue stripe fabric to go between the plate sections and I will make the sashing squares the same yellow as the centre of the plates. Clear as mud!!
Here's a pic of the stripey fabric.

The colours, blue, green and yellow, are brighter than the photo portrays.

Dresden Plate Quilt Progress

Hi everyone. Hope you have had a good weekend or are still having one, depending on our time difference!!
I've had a nice weekend. I got some sewing done and I also visited my brother and sister today.
I'll update you first of all on the progress of my quilt.
Well, I've managed to get all 16 'plates' finished and have now begun to sew them onto white squares. I went to Nimble Fingers in town and got some lovely white fabric which is just exactly what I was looking for!

I love this white fabric!

It's perfect for my quilt.

I'm hoping that by the end of the week I'll have them all done!! Wishful thinking??

Now for my charity hopping finds.
First of all there is this lovely item.

This is a hollow decorative 'book' made of tin and featuring a very appealing coastal design. It is actually made for holding a tea light as there is a hole on the back. My son was a fisherman for 14 years and he loves anything to do with the sea, so this is for him. Both my sons inherited the 'quirky' gene!! Oh I'm so glad!! I can indulge endlessly!!
Then I found these for my younger son. A set of four handmade coasters. I love these!!

And last, but by no means least, I received this little owl ornament from my sister today. It's SO cute! It measures about 1 and a quarter inches high and has been named Oslo. Don't ask me why. I just thought it was a good name for him!!

Lovely Properties on Herby Street!!!

Just had to share these with you. They are from a set of 13 herb jars I bought in a charity shop. For 20 pence each!!
I have a lovely niece who is a great cook and I am going to give her them as part of her Christmas present this year.
I only photographed 4 of them but if anyone would like to see them all I'll be happy to post more pics!!

English Paper Piecing

Hi again. Just wanted to share this pic of a star design made with the English Paper Piecing method which I love doing.
I was 'dredging' through some photos to put on my Far North Photography Blog when I came across this little pic.

It is all hand pieced and was my first real 'effort' at this method. I'm not actually going to proceed with this one as I'm not entirely happy with the overall quality close up!!
But I will definitely make another one. Now that I've learned how to do it properly!! ha ha!

IT'S FINISHED.........AND ON TIME!!!

I'm so happy! I've finally got my Project Linus quilt finished and within the time limit!
Here are a couple of pics!

I've really enjoyed making this little quilt. I even wrote a poem to go with it, which goes like this.

This quilt is for a child who needs
some very special care indeed
whose life in some way isn't free
to run with dreams like you and me.

The fabrics you will find right here
are chosen for their charm and cheer
one is recycled, others new
and one is of a tie-dyed hue!

The pastel check, a mother's dress,
came up quite good when washed and pressed!
But you may find some threads are teased
where little children hugged her knees!

The playful pictures in the centre
are a happy place a child can enter,
and I can see their dreams take flight
while one child flies her small red kite.

And looking closely you will see
each stitch is not formed perfectly,
but thinking of a young child's fears
caused me sometimes to sew through tears.

So is it perfect? No it's not!
And does it matter? Not a jot!
It's stitched with joy and bound by love
and prayers for comfort from above.

Are we nearly there yet????

Remember those words falling from the lips of little children?? Well, I'm saying that to myself now!!! Trying hard to get my Project Linus quilt finished, I have decided to post some pics on here today. If nothing else it will help me convince myself that the quilt is really progressing!!
I've machine quilted the first border with simple straight lines ( the coward that I am!!!) and I have started a diamond outer border which I am quilting by hand.

I thought the diamond kite shape would lead the eye up into the diamonds in the border.
That was the theory!!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

For me, the answer to that question is, "Without my help"!!
I am not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination, so I'm very thankful for my husband Bob, who seems to be able to transform any patch of ground into something colourful and joyful.

Frilly Flannels!!!

What a gorgeous day we have had up here in Shetland. Warm, sunny and uplifting. But personally I'm not a sun lover and so after visiting my brother in town I was glad to get home into the cool of my little 'hobby room'.
As I've done quite a lot on my Project Linus quilt this weekend, I thought I would do something completely different. So I 'frilled up a flannel'!!
I had bought 5 new flannels ( 99p each ) from one of the chemist shops in town. Two white, one turquoise, one pale blue and one cerise. I knew I had a lovely piece of fabric that would go well with the turquoise flannel, so I got to work on it, and this is the result.

I have some gorgeous rose fabric which I bought at my favourite shop, Nimble Fingers. I am going to use that on the white flannel next time. I can't wait, but Project Linus is calling me back, so I'll have to!!

Just finishing my blog today with a photo of a couple of Shetland pony foals that I caught on camera on the way home today.
What the photo doesn't tell you is that the little foal standing up kept trying to wake up the other one by giving him a little kick and nibbling his furry mane!! It was funny to watch them!

Charity Hopper Strikes Again!!

I love going through the charity shops in town. It's so very therapeutic!! Yesterday I went with my sister and we had a great time rummaging. I call this very enjoyable pastime "Charity Hopping", as we literally hop from one shop to the next, seeking out the gems and jewels!! ( Not literally! I'd rather have books and fabric!!)

Anyway, I thought I'd share my purchases with you as I do with my car booting as well.
So here are a couple of things I really liked.

First of all I found this gorgeous dressing gown. I just love the fabric, which is cotton with a Charles Rennie Mackintosh (CRM) type of design to the hem, pockets, border and tie-belt.
I'm not really a dressing gown wearer. I prefer lounging around in PJ's, so I'm not even sure I will be wearing it.
My immediate thought when I saw it was quite simply, "FABRIC"! I thought of things I could make with it. Plain cushions with the CRM trim.
Even a couple of small cushions with a pocket on the front of each, just because I can!!! And of course I could quilt up a little wall hanging, which I think would look very sweet! Whatever I make, the dressing gown only cost £3.00. I'd have paid that for the belt!!

What would you do with this fabric?

All realistic suggestions most welcome!!!

Next is another favourite thing of mine.........a tin!!! I adore tins, or anything that poses as a container, but I think tins have a special appeal.

This one has cats on it. Of course I would have bought it anyway, but there was an added attraction. I realized as soon as I saw it that my sister had given me the matching square tin a few weeks before!!I couldn't quite believe it!!

These pics show the front, back and lid.
I've not been able to put anything in it yet as there was a really horrible smell in it when I took the lid off!! But I've put a halved lemon inside and kept the lid off too so hopefully it will soon be fit for use.
Having said that, I don't think I'll put biscuits in it!!
Well, that's all the pics for now. I did buy four story books for a friend's little girl but I can't let you see them because I've already given them to her!!

Car Booting Sunday

Well, a new week has dawned and after the last few hectic days, I am having a rest. I went to a car boot sale yesterday. It was in the village hall near our house so I didn't have far to go.
I'm always on the lookout for sewing things, fabric, recyclable clothing etc. Although I didn't find any of that yesterday I was still pleased with my purchases.

This is a gorgeous little mother-of-pearl lidded container. It measures about 2 and a half inches high and the same across the bottom. I'm not sure what I'll put in it yet. Ideas welcome!!

This next item is for one of my son's who loves cats. A black cat clock with a fish pendulum. I detached the fish to take the photo. Maybe I shouldn't have put it so near the cat's mouth!!

More cats now!! This time a framed print for which I found a perfect space on the wall. Funny how we can always make room for more stuff!! Here's the pic!

The little red case below ( of which you can just see one corner!!!) did not really take a good photo.
Sorry, I will rephrase that.
I did not take a good photo of this little red case!!! But it is the most delightful bright red with a sturdy body and a zip opening. The inside has various compartments which I will no doubt fill with quilting things.
My little magnificent Magda always has to be part of what I'm doing and this 'photo shoot' was no exception. Every time I went to click she peeped around the corner. Finally I gave up because I couldn't stop laughing, so instead of concentrating on photographing the 'red case', I just photographed the 'head case'!!! She's just adorable!!

Last, but by no means least, this little journal with the most delightful floral picture on the front, plus three ribbon markers which match the colour of some of the pages. The pages are pink, lilac, lemon and pale green.

I have a special purpose for this journal. My sister and I are going to keep a journal called "40 Days of Gratitude". In a way it's like a theme you may choose at Lent, but we are just going to choose a date to start and take it from there.

Anything can be included.
A picture or photo.
Something that creates a memory we are thankful for.
Poems.
Whatever springs to mind really.

Where Did This week Go?

I can't quite believe it's Friday!! Or, as we call it up here in Shetland, "Shetland Times Day". Everyone looks forward to the weekly paper with it's news, views and local interest articles.
Well, my main news this week is that one of my brothers is not a well man. He took ill this week and we took him to hospital, where they diagnosed a small stroke. They think he has had one before and expect it to happen again. Personally, I am praying and believing for a much different outcome!!
If you believe in the power of prayer, please pray for him. His name is Jimmy.
On a lighter note I have managed to fit in a little bit of quilting. Not as much as I had hoped but every little helps!!(So Tesco says!!!!)I hope to get a little more done this evening if I don't fall asleep in the chair!
So, have a nice weekend. Make time to laugh and make memories with friends and family.

The above photo was taken by the shore just in front of my brother's house. It is very appropriate that he should have a fantastic view of the sea, as he has been a seaman all his life. Whatever the weather his view is simply gorgeous!!

Project Linus Quilt Progress

Well, here we are. It's Saturday evening. Another beautiful day here in Shetland with the sun shining and a lovely breeze. I probably should have been working on my quilt all day but of course the weather brings me out of the woodwork and away from any work at all!!
I popped in to Nimble Fingers (see Blog Archive for Nimble Fingers and click!!) this afternoon to see if Polly could recommend a thimble for me as I don't get along with them very well, but my fingers are becoming more perforated than a Tetley One Cup!!
She showed me these:

I'm so glad she did!!! They are much better than blood red thread!!
At first they seemed to feel really obvious on my fingers (not ALL my fingers!!! Just the tips of three!!), but after a little while I was quilting really well and getting into the swing of things. I might have to take the rest of the quilting stitches out now and start doing it all over again!.
So, I am happy in the knowledge that I can probably now finish the quilt without visiting A&E!
I will see how far I've got by Sunday night. May be able to post another photo!! Here's hoping.
For anyone struggling like me to use a thimble comfortably, you should consider the Thimble-It sticky pads. You may be surprized!!

Rumblings From My Fat Quarters 2009

This afternoon while out with my husband getting some shopping, I went into a charity shop for my usual browse. There weren't many people in and it was good to have a little bit of elbow room. You have to dig deep sometimes for those all important bargains!!
I happened to be standing near a shelf of small ornaments when I heard a man tell the shop assistant he had a donation of money for them. 'Quite a few pounds', he said, or words to that effect. His voice was low and hesitant, as if those simple words he said had somehow cost him dearly.
'How much?', the assistant asked, with a fat-cheeked brusqueness.
'Four....hundred.....pounds', said the man, his words folding in on him like well-handled sterling.
'Is this from some fund raising effort?'
At this point, a horrible stale silence filled the room, broken into only by a deep breath drawn from the chest of a broken man.
'N..n..no', he began. 'My wife just died. We...we... took up a collection.'
'Oh ok', the charity worker said, pointing to the left. 'You'll have to take it over there to count it out and fill in a form because there's no room on the counter!'

I had a few small items in my hands that I was just about to pay for. I stood for a moment, not really knowing what to do. I watched as two pairs of hands dealt with the money. One pair strong and grasping. Accepting the generous donation, five twenties at a time.
Then I thought of the hands of the man, slowly being emptied of his poignant show of respect.
I left the shop and took a seat on a wooden bench for a moment or two. Then I went back to find the man. I knew him. Not well, but I knew him. I saw him walk ahead of me, his shoulders heavy and his steps reluctant.
I called his name and he turned slowly, giving me time to catch up.
'I'm terribly sorry to hear of your wife', I offered simply.
'Yes...thank you...thank you...', he replied. 'It was terrible.....she got cancer...and...'
I held out my hands to him and he lifted his to mine. They were cold and trembling. But most of all they just felt....empty. That deep, awkward emptiness that comes when there's nothing left to hold.

I cannot quite grasp why the society we live in has become so estranged from compassion. Why is it that there are some who can lash out afresh at other's injuries? Gaze at their open wounds, yet turn their empty eyes away lest they should be called upon to care.

Perhaps some people count on money, while others count the cost.

Project Linus Quilt Photos

As promised, here are a few pics of the quilt I am working on for Project Linus.
First, an 'ariel view'!

This next pic is is one of the nine 'sections' that depict a little child having fun. I am putting three quilted outlines round each one to give that sort of 3D effect. I love the way the space hopper is standing out. I still have a couple of things to do on it but I'm getting there!

I really love this little horsey one.

I've always wanted to fly a kite. But I ended up quilting one instead!!
This final picture shows off the lovely fabric for the backing. To my knowledge it is a Liberty Tana Lawn fabric. It is the most delightful colour in a Paisley design as you can see.

The fabrics used are from various sources, although the Paisley is new. The multi-check fabric was bought as a dress from a charity shop! I just loved the colours, although I wouldn't ever wear a dress!!

Rumblings From My Fat Quarters EXPLAINED!

A FAT QUARTER is a piece of fabric, normally bought by quilters, which is a quarter of a metre or yard ( if, like me, you don't do metres!!). You cut half a yard of fabric and then cut this piece in half across the length. This gives you a piece of fabric approximately 18 inches by 22 inches.

I often sit in the quiet and go through my fat quarters!!

That is when the rumbling sometimes starts.
You know those things that sometimes bug you, other times dement you, confuse you or simply just chip away at your wood!!

These are the things I will write about here. It's just to share with you my thoughts on possible ways to counteract the negative, complacent, selfish and insensitive actions or words of people we share the world with.
I like to visualize it as standing on a beach enjoying the view, then suddenly seeing a wave of gigantic proportions heading towards the shore. But I just stand there. Hold my hand out, and defy the destructive element from advancing. I refuse to be eaten up by an uninvited or unwelcome influence.

So, now and then, I will ***rumble from my fat quarters***!!

Nimble Fingers

I just want to tell you about a local shop I visit here in Shetland called Nimble Fingers. The proprietor, Polly, always has a warm welcome awaiting customers. It's a lovely open and airy shop with excellent lighting, which is great for matching fabric with thread etc.
Nimble fingers sells lots of necessary items for various crafts, while also holding teaching classes and competitions, and of course encouraging the young ones to get involved in crafting at an early age.
It was Polly who asked if I could make a quilt for Project Linus and I'm delighted she asked me, as I am really enjoying my project.

I have decided to start blogging because I would like to draw your attention to Project Linus who distribute quilts to children who are in hospitals, hospices and refuges or any child in need of cheering and comfort. Please visit the Project Linus website to read all about it.
Amazingly they have had 100,109 quilts donated since 2000.
Could you add another one to that number?

Last week I was asked if I could make a quilt for them too. I was delighted to say I would try my best to get it finished within the time limit. My deadline is the last week of June!! I remembered that I had a child's quilt which I had begun about four years ago ( yet another UFO! Unfinished Object!). So I am now continuing with the quilting and will post a photo on here very soon to give you an idea of what it looks like so far.
